Themes.

  • The climate crisis unfolds across collapsing ecosystems, altered landscapes, and communities forced to adapt to a rapidly changing planet. Introduced by an essay from Dr. Richard Alley, the chapter moves from wildfire zones and melting ice sheets to sites of resilience and environmental activism, tracing the profound ways climate change is reshaping life in the 21st century.

  • From pandemic response and overwhelmed hospitals to addiction, reproductive rights, and gun violence, this chapter considers health as both a medical and social condition. Introduced by an essay from Dr. Joia Mukherjee, the work documents how care, survival, and inequality intersect across contemporary life, revealing public health as a measure of collective responsibility and justice.

  • Across borders, prisons, protest movements, and displaced communities, the struggle for dignity and protection remains one of the defining realities of the modern era. Introduced by an essay from Elisa Massimino, the chapter examines how human rights are contested, defended, and lived under the pressures of conflict, authoritarianism, and inequality.

  • Factories close, industries disappear, and entire communities are left to navigate economic transformation and uncertainty. Introduced by an essay from Dr. Lizabeth Cohen, the chapter traces the social and emotional aftermath of deindustrialization through stories of labor, decline, adaptation, and resilience in places once defined by manufacturing.

  • Political rallies, courtrooms, protests, and moments of civic unrest reveal a democracy under pressure and constantly being renegotiated in public view. Introduced by an essay from Mark Danner, the chapter reflects on power, truth, polarization, and participation in a period marked by institutional strain and political division.

  • This chapter examines race not as a singular issue, but as a force shaping everyday life, public memory, and political struggle across the United States. Introduced by an essay from Dr. Nikhil Pal Singh, the work moves between moments of protest, grief, community, creativity, and resistance, revealing the enduring structures and lived realities of racial inequality.

  • From front lines and occupied cities to refugee corridors and civilian aftermath, the realities of war extend far beyond the battlefield itself. Introduced by an essay from Dr. David Kilcullen, the chapter explores conflict in an era shaped by insurgency, technological escalation, geopolitical rivalry, and displacement.

  • Trade routes, border crossings, financial systems, migration flows, and strategic rivalries form the landscape of an increasingly interconnected world. Moving across sites where global pressures are most directly felt, the chapter considers how globalization has produced both unprecedented connection and growing instability in the 21st century.

  • Daily life now unfolds through networks, platforms, algorithms, and systems that increasingly shape how people communicate, work, organize, and perceive reality. Introduced by an essay from Dr. Fred Turner, the chapter examines both the promises and consequences of the technological revolution, from expanded connectivity to surveillance, misinformation, and digital dependence.
